James Webb Space Telescope
January has been an exciting month for space enthusiasts with the successful launch and deployment of the James Webb Space Telescope. On January 24th, the Webb Space Telescope arrived safely at its L2 observation point. It is now in the process of cooling down and preparing for the next stage of alignment and calibration. L2 or Lagrange Point 2 is one of five gravitational zones around the Sun and Earth where equipment of this nature can hold its position with only a few orbital adjustments. L2 offers additional protection from temperature and light exposure swings which supports the Webb Space Telescope’s need to remain cool as it views the cosmos with its infrared light technology.
With the Hubble Space Telescope soon reaching the end of its life, the $10 billion Webb Space Telescope is set to continue this exploration. The Webb Telescope is estimated to be 100 times more powerful than the Hubble and will reveal images of some of the first stars and galaxies in the universe.
